Franklin County was created by law from Hampshire County on 24 June 1811, being almost half of the northern part of the county. The act took effect on 2 December 1811. The first matter recorded was a probate on 7 April 1812.

In the survey of state records published in 1889, the probate books and files were in good condition and complete. Each volume has its own index. The original indexes, dockets, records, and files from 1812 to 1971 are at the Judicial Archives in Boston. Records after 1971 are at the county office in Greenfield:
