In its first General Congress on Zoom, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GSMD) elected Jane Hurt Governor General for the 2020 - 2023 term. During her term, GG Hurt will work with the Society's Executive Committee and General Board of Assistants to govern the Society’s Plymouth, Massachusetts international headquarters and serve its 30,000 plus membership.
Governor General Hurt will lead a twelve-member Executive Committee that is tasked with setting policy and guiding the operation of the society through its Executive Director, Susan Belekewicz, and staff in Plymouth, MA.
Business of the Society includes approving lineage to the Pilgrims through its Historian General's office, operating a genealogy research library, supporting member services, offering tours of the Mayflower Society House and Mayflower Meetinghouse, and fulfilling the Society’s education mission by publishing Pilgrim-related books and its gold-standard of lineage books, The Silver Books Collection. The Governor General's job also requires travel to visit its autonomous societies across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia to keep them informed of general Society business and activities.
