Hampshire Co., Mass., Probate Guide and Index, 1660 to 1850

Return to Mass. State Guide
Back to Hampshire County Guide

Hampshire County probate records start two years before the formation of the county from Middlesex County on 27 March 1660, being the western half of the old county.

In the survey of state records published in 1889, the probate books and files were in good condition and complete, though some books needed rebinding. Each volume has its own index, though most are incomplete. The original indexes, dockets, records, and files are at the county office in Northampton:

Hampshire Probate and Family Court
Hall of Records
33 King Street
Northampton MA 01060
413-586-8500
Hours and location

Most of the records have been microfilmed. These microfilms can be found at the Judicial Archives at the Mass. Archives in Boston, the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, and at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City as:

Card Index, 1660-1971 [FHL to 1988]
Files, 1660-1916 [location of these records unfound]
Record books, 1660-1916
