A Guide to Massachusetts Cemeteries by David Allen Lambert (Boston, 2 nd ed., 2009), softcover, xvii + 345 pp., indexed. $17.95.

The first edition was well received in 2002 [see MD, 51 [2002]:175]. This book is one hundred pages longer than the previous edition. While there are a few more cemeteries identified here that the author did not have in 2002, the change in size is mainly caused by larger type and formatting – both make this guide easier to read.

One new feature in this edition is its keeping up with the library cataloging team. Like all older libraries, NEHGS developed its own in-house call number system in the 1800s for published books and manuscripts. Both have been extensively re-cataloged as the Society moved to an online catalog. This guide now reflects the Library of Congress call numbers and the new designations in the R. Stanton Avery Special Collections Department. The author has made additions and corrections to the listings and created a more user-friendly index. There is a diagram to show how to read each entry and bibliography for frequently cited works so the entry, itself, only needs a short citation. These changes to the guide are a natural evolution making this importance guide easier to use.
