Scholarships from the Society

The Society is proud to award two categories of scholarships each year. Each category has two awards. Please read through the descriptions of the two types of scholarships and decide if you or your child qualify for either. Links are provided below for any forms needed to apply. Deadlines are noted below. Applications for both scholarships should be mailed directly to the Society's address found on the forms. Scholarships are awarded annually in June. The scholarships are to be used for college related expenses. Awards are granted for a one-year period.

 

Francis P. Sears Mayflower Descendant Scholarship

These scholarships are granted from funds left by Francis P. Sears with the Boston Foundation for the establishment of $1000 scholarships for two needy students who are descended from a Mayflower passenger and are attending a college or university in one of the six New England states. To be considered for this scholarship, the applicant must provide the following:

  1. The applicant must completely fill out the application form (even if you are re-applying).
  2. The applicant must be a current member of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants OR prove that the student is the son, daughter, granddaughter, grandson, niece, nephew, grandniece, or grandnephew of a current member.
  3. Proof of college acceptance and enrollment in the coming college year.
  4. The applicant must show a continuing financial need.
  5. An original Essay entitled “My Pilgrim Heritage” (not to be more than 500 words). The Essay of the winning applicants may be published in The Mayflower Compact, which is the newsletter of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Mail your application form and related materials to the Society postmarked by 15 May.

 

 

Thanksgiving Day Award

These awards are given by the Society in recognition of the Wampanoag Nation's assistance to our Pilgrim ancestors. Two awards of $1000 each are given to applicants based on financial need and be in good standing in college, university, or junion college. To be considered for this award, the applicant must provide the following:

  1. The applicant must completely fill out the application form (even if you are re-applying).
  2. The applicant must provide proof of membership in the Wampanoag Nation by a tribal official's certification that the applicant is a bona fide member of a Tribe of the Wampanoag Nation and a copy (front and back) of a current tribal membership card.
  3. Proof of college acceptance and enrollment in the coming college year. Also include a transcript of your grades and SAT scores.
  4. An original Essay entitled “My Native American Heritage” (not to be more than 500 words). The Essay of the winning applicants may be published in The Mayflower Compact, which is the newsletter of the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Mail your application form and related materials to the Society postmarked by 15 May.
